Medicinal importance of Tulsi (Ocimum Sanctum )
Common name of Tulsi: Holy Basil,
Botanical Name : Osmium Sanctum
Family : Lamiaceae
- In India,Tulsi is commonly known as Holy Basil. The botanical name is Osmium Sanctum belongs to family Lamiaceae.
- In tropical regions it, grows like weed and also cultivated for its medicinal values.
- Tulsi plant is worshipped by Hindus from ancient times so much importance is given in Hindu religion.
- Physical appearance indicate that it is erect plant and height may be 50 to 60 cm tall. It has hairy stems, opposite ovate leaves and purple flowers. Leaves release strong scent.
- Tulsi is categorised into two types.
1.Krishna Tulsi – Has purple leaves 2.Shri Tulsi – Has Green leaves
Medicinal Properties :
- As a natural hand sanitizer :Tulsi has been used as a natural hand sanitizer due to its anti-microbial activities. People also use Tulsi water as a mouthwash for the same reason.
- Chewing on Tulsi leaves: Many people chew about 5-10 leaves of Tulsi as a morning ritual to obtain fresh breath and to get rid of bad habits.
- Tulsi tea : Tulsi tea is one of the most important home remedies for the common cold or sore throat.It also help to strengthen the respiratory system .
